IT'S ALL ABOUT TRUST

The counselors in this directory have completed the rigorous 40-hour training program, and passed the certification exam with at least a 90% score. While Academy Hour and CFRC does not endorse any counselor or his/her abilities, we do believe the CFRC program provides a counselor with a stronger understanding of the law enforcement and first responder community and the unique counseling and mental health needs of these heroes.

The Certified First Responder Counselor (CFRC) program was first released on July 1, 2019. The first 10 graduates to pass the exam have been named "Inaugural Graduates," and are contained within our directory listing below.  Other CFRC counselors are listed alphabetically by last name under the state they practice in.

Bio:

Dr. Siegel has been in private practice in Costa Mesa since 1990 (and from 2018 with an additional location in Long Beach) treating individuals and couples. Trauma has been a primary focus for most of her years in practice because of the significant role it plays in many of our lives, particularly the most vulnerable, and at best, those who have tremendous exposure to traumatic stress like Veterans and First Responders. Interestingly, doctors and particularly psychiatrists have the highest rates of suicide, while first responders have the highest rate of alcoholism and drug abuse. Dr. Siegel’s past experience includes 10 years working with front line first responders (trauma doctors and nurses as well as police and fire personnel) as well as patients and families in the Burn Unit, Intensive Care Unit, Emergency Room and the Traumatic Stress Program at UCI Medical Center, a Level 1 (most critical) Trauma Center. The TSP program involved working with trauma survivors in groups. Dr. Siegel is currently a volunteer faculty member in Neuropsychiatry at UCI and works closely with residents from a variety of departments and at various levels of experience in their training. In 2013, Dr. Siegel completed a year-long training program at the Los Angeles Institute’s Trauma Studies Program where over 25 populations of varying trauma victims were studied, including Holocaust survivors. She was also a volunteer clinician at the now-closed Soldier’s Project for 5 years where she worked with Veterans and families returning from the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars. Dr. Siegel currently volunteers with the Wounded Warrior Project as well as being a network provider for Centerstone Military Services. She participates regularly on ride alongs with the Long Beach Police Department which provides her with a more intimate perspective of the challenges faced by first responders. Another primary interest is in treating adults with trauma which includes childhood abuse and neglect, loss, sexual abuse, PTSD and other first responder trauma.

Bio: Growing up as the daughter of a police officer helped Alisha to understand the family dynamics that are "normal" to first responder families. As the spouse of a law enforcement officer, she now sees it all from a different and more insightful perspective. First responder cultures are often misunderstood by those outside of the culture itself, and thus it can be difficult to find someone who comprehends the adversity faced in these careers. As a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Alisha's focus has been in working with trauma, adolescents, and family dynamics. She also has extensive experience working with anxiety, depression, and grief and loss. One of her primary areas of interest is with first responders, military, and their loved ones. In sessions, Alisha makes sure to form a personal link with her clients to establish a relationship that is real, honest, caring, and helpful. Through empathy and a deep mutual understanding, I am able to bear witness to the experiences of her clients in a way that provides insight and allows for growth in the chaos of life.

Bio: Dena Paniccia has spent 10 years working with families and individuals on healing from a multitude of issues. Too often, have these issues included things such as trauma, anxiety and depression. She has seen issues that responders faced being ignored or excused away because "that's what you signed up for." Making a decision to help your community is selfless act. Responders deserve to have someone in their corner that understands the decisions you make everyday are both selfless and sometimes tiring. Being part of a responder family herself, she understands this. You deserve the care, attention and privacy to be able to work through the difficult things you deal with on a day to day basis.
