CFRC · For licensed clinicians

Certified First Responder Counselor

Master the specialized clinical skills, ethical frameworks, and cultural competencies needed to effectively counsel law enforcement, firefighters, and emergency responders through occupation-specific trauma and mental health challenges.

The course

What you'll learn

First responders face extraordinary occupational demands that shape their psychology, relationships, and help-seeking behavior in ways most clinicians never encounter. This course equips licensed mental health counselors with essential knowledge of responder culture, including the warrior identity, peer support systems, and institutional barriers to mental health care, so you can meet clients where they are rather than where you expect them to be. You'll develop clinical competency across the full spectrum of first responder mental health: trauma assessment and treatment, cumulative stress and burnout, compassion fatigue, suicide risk, substance use, and relationship strain. Through realistic case studies and required ride-along experiences, you'll build authentic understanding of the operational realities that shape your clients' worldview and therapeutic engagement. The course covers essential professional responsibilities (documentation standards, mandatory reporting nuances, ethical decision-making, appropriate referrals, and self-care) so you can practice confidently within legal and clinical boundaries while maintaining the trust that first responders require to access mental health support.

Who it's for

Fully and independently licensed mental health clinicians: LCSW, LMFT, LPC, LMHC, psychologist, or your jurisdiction’s equivalent. Still completing supervision hours? CFRA is the right fit.
